The Challenge to Raise Expectations in Baltimore City

About

Picture of myselfWelcome to the site.  I currently serve in a variety of roles.  I recently graduated from the University of Maryland School of Law in Baltimore, MD.  I also have worked the past three years for Dr. Andres Alonso, CEO of the Baltimore City Public Schools.

I've been in Baltimore for 5 years now, and I've loved the relocation.  I originally came to Baltimore through Teach for America, for which I was a 2005 Baltimore City Corps Member (current alum).  It's during this stage that I met wife Lea Ferguson, married August 15, 2009 at St. Casimir's Catholic Church in Canton (neighborhood within Baltimore City).  We taught next door to each other at Vivien T. Thomas Medical Arts Academy, a neighborhood zone school in West Baltimore.  We got engaged on January 20, 2009, at President Barack Obama's Inauguration ("Tickets to History" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huuioDAIF2s).

My experiences with public schools and the tangible realities of the achievement gap changed my life and forced me to reevaluate my priorities and beliefs about my community, the world around me, and the opportunity our generation has to affect the educational achievement gap.  For all of these reasons (most of which, Lea), I am thoroughly grateful.

While in Baltimore I've helped on a number of political campaigns, and I've worked in various roles throughout City & State government:

  • Community Liaison, Council President Sheila Dixon (2005-2007)
  • Campaign Organizer, Team 40 to Elect Salima Siler Marriott (State Senate) and Antonio Hayes (MD House of Delegates) (summer 2006)
  • Law Clerk, Criminal Appeals Division, Maryland Attorney General's Office, Baltimore, MD (summer 2008)
  • Upcomming, Summer Associate, Venable LLP (summer 2009)
  • Masters in Teaching (M.A.T.), Johns Hopkins School of Education, Baltimore, MD ('07)

I came to the City after attending Davidson College (Class of 2005).  Prior to that, I attended Georgetown Prep in N. Bethesda, MD (Class of 2001) for high school.
